The Year of Obullma

Nobody’s seeing the big picture here. And no wonder: the following key paragraph in Obama’s inauguration speech was struck off from all news portals in China:

“To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflicts, or blame their society’s ills on the West: Know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.”

The bit about people blaming society’s ills on the West? Let’s be fair. That’s yes and no. It was Lehman Brothers and a small bunch of greedy first-class-flying Wall Street CEOs who sowed the seeds of our current financial chaos. Although some economists argue that the flood of cheap made-in-China products is one of the causes, attributing these ills to the “West“ can hardly be called a bias. It was these bankers and salesmen with an MBA degree who duped Hong Kong people into investing their savings into American mini-bonds. But for the Chinese people, this is not the first disaster brought over from the “West”. Second-rate Western demagogues, like Marx and Lenin, did the same by exporting their ideologies to the East and ended up inflicting grave social ills on a much more catastrophic scale, although the blame ultimately falls on the virus spread by Chairman Mao together with his group of ignorant Chinese intellectuals in the 1930s.

Then comes the yes-argument. The fact that prostitution had rapidly spread around massage parlors and nightclubs in economically booming Guangdong was in the 1980s blamed on the “bad influence” and “spiritual pollution” brought in with the capitalism of the “West.” But as more and more Chinese became aware that prostitution is good fun, combined with the fact that sex had actually been on sale in ancient China 3,000 years ago, the “West” was quickly forgiven for that sin. Neither is corruption imported from the “West” either, as Chinese eunuchs were notorious for taking bribes. Read any school history textbook.

Can you blame the business failure of Hong Kong Disneyland on the “West“? Shanghai is embracing the plan for a new Disneyland theme park as joyfully as Madame Butterfly setting a warm bed for the return of Captain Perry. We in Hong Kong have adopted a system with an independent judiciary and the ICAC, designed and once successfully operated by the former British colonial government, a.k.a. the “West.“ Our chief executive and all senior government officials here were educated in or by the West, awarded with university degrees in business, law or medicine, and have ample knowledge of golf and red wine. We Chinamen got rid of the pigtail and helped our fellow countrywomen to unbind their feet at the turn of the last century, because the “West” told us that we looked stupid.

I also wouldn’t blame the “West“ for the overcrowded 1.3 billion-strong Chinese population either, which is the root of China’s big problems of poverty and pollution. We haven’t stopped breeding like mad, and certainly not under President Truman or Reagan’s order. Aids is from Africa. Donald Tsang is a Sir, so he can’t be worse than Tung, etc, etc... I’ll stop the long, boring list here, and wish you all a prosperous shit-free Year of the Bull.

有錢有高潮

 男人越富有，越能帶引女伴床上性高潮？這樣的結果，也要「根據一項調查」來「發現」？
原來貧賤夫妻，一心都是柴米油鹽，根據這項「調查」，很難誘發女方性高潮。

確實，三百呎的公屋，床底下堆滿了舊的月餅盒罐，枕頭散發男人一股大牌檔孖蒸和油炸蟹的異味，床邊的櫃上擱一張他已故父親，也就是你的老爺──的一幅黑白肖像，老人家一對眼睛碌碌地監察，即使碌架床上格一雙子女都已熟睡，在這樣的環境做愛，不，行房，如果還有高潮，女方要有超越宮崎駿加史匹堡的想像力，緊閉眼睛，要憋出汗來幻想，身上的那個貨櫃車司機的肥腩中坑是金城武。

有錢當然不一樣。地點不是深水，而是米蘭的喜來登。落地長窗，下臨堂圓穹的日落美景。這位億萬富豪男友，放下了從頭等機艙夾帶來的香港八卦周刊，從 LV行李袋拿出一打白洋燭，團團圍放在床邊點燃，然後關上了房燈。

窗帘沒有拉上。窗是昏黃的燭影，窗外是幽藍的星光。眼前的男人，雖然像劉江華，你也可以閉上眼睛，幻想他是──這一點點的遐思，如此環境，不太困難吧──劉德華，很快就有性高潮。

男人的錢多於某一極限，女人的性高潮卻沒有了──例如，他的錢多得能同時包起六個東歐俄羅斯的模特兒，與你一起坐遊艇，他要玩 orgy，你卻不會有高潮。

或者他有一架私人珍寶機。機艙有一個酒櫃，有一八四八年拉弗三五瓶，他淫醉不已，一面做，一面打飽噎，動作之間，機艙遇到氣流。此情此景，他的非凡富有，也無助身為女伴的你擁有性高潮。
男人要富有得剛剛好，找到那個臨界點──有錢得能跟你坐頭等機艙到米蘭，卻又不要暴富得在私人飛機的氣流中飽噎淫醉。男人找到這個 critical point，比女人找到自己的 G點更難。

上帝造男女，並沒有慈悲到這個程度。上帝也很現實而勢利。粵語殘片的張活游和白燕，偏偏有一大窩子女，編導在暗示：他們自婚後，只有「行埋」，從無做愛；只有繁殖，無所謂高潮。

「有情飲水飽」？這句話也沒有騙你。他有情，但沒有錢，只能給你喝白開水，喝水當然會飽的，僅僅是飲飽而已，沒有說會有高潮。

所以香港的電車男、大學畢業生、毅進和展翅計劃的同學，牛年來了，要努力呀，只要勤奮，就能多賺錢，能去 Sogo去買一打玫瑰紅的洋燭，就可以 make a difference。愛情是要用金錢養活的，當你做完之後，掏出一根萬寶路向四周的燭光借個火，點了，長長噴出一口煙時，她喘息完了，躺在你懷，還是笑瞇瞇的，你就會知道。

A Good President and a Filial Son

It’s curtains for George W. Bush, allegedly one of the worst presidents in the history of the United States. Should we on this side of the earth join the global Bush-bashing spree led by the editorials of the New York Times and the Guardian?

George W. Bush was actually a good president, judged by every Chinese moral and cultural standard. The invasion of Iraq not only liberated the Iraqi people, but it also liberated their productivity—they’ve achieved a remarkable 30 percent GDP growth rate compared with before the war. Yes, there was a high toll to pay: about half a million Iraqi civilians perished during the war. But did we Chinese not happily pay a similar but much greater price, with Chairman Mao’s execution of 8 million “counter-revolutionaries,” mostly landlords, scholars and local government officials of the previous Nationalist government (of course, this is not counting tens of millions of deaths of innocent people during the Cultural Revolution)? It’s all about liberation. As the rural Chinese celebrated Chairman Mao’s birthday last month, why shouldn’t George W. Bush rank in the same league as Che Guevara, Ho Chi Minh and Mao? Especially by the standards of those Western liberals with their rose-tinted glasses? Strange.

Then comes the “it’s all about oil” charge. Of course it’s all about oil—we have to make it cheap enough for someone like Noam Chomsky to drive to Wal-Mart every weekend. There’s no oil in Afghanistan, so Obama’s commitment to send more US troops there sounds a bit like an expensive free lunch. If the American people are fed up with their government acting as the World Cop, then we Chinese are ready to take up the role. We’re sending our warships to Somalia, for one thing. And that’s not considering the exodus of millions of Chinese legal and illegal immigrants ready to take over San Francisco, New York, Paris and Rome. We define the ingredients of milk and decide that melamine is good for the health of all children in the world, as much as the Americans define the recipe of Coca-Cola. Oh yes, we’re more than ready to fill the gap, and will eventually be more than happy to make the Little Red Book together with the Koran a compulsory text in all American secondary schools, if you so wish.

You call Bush daft? We call him a good son of filial piety. One of the reasons why George W. Bush invaded Iraq was revenge for Saddam’s assassination plan against his father. That’s Confucian values in modern practice. The 43rd president of the United States was more Chinese than any of his predecessors, so with some firecrackers to see him off, Bush will be missed. This is a multicultural and alternative verdict on a man of faith and integrity.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Bottom

It was no big deal, just a couple playing around on a private beach in the Caribbean. But the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi was branded by her own countrymen as a traitor as well as “the shame of all Asian women” when the topless photos of her with her Israeli multi-millionaire boyfriend Aviv “Vivi” Nevo, also a powerful man in Hollywood, appeared online.

Nevo, in a crouching tiger pose, was pawing all over her bottom, which had bounced out like a hidden dragon on the loose. It’s no surprise that this unexpected slide show, a series of snapshots more spectacular than the acrobatic stunts in any Jackie Chan movie, has captivated a worldwide audience. It’s also understandable that while the world was watching with some amusement, the Chinese alone felt deeply insulted. It would have been a national celebration had the pictures been of a Chinese male celebrity such as Chow Yun-fat petting a topless Angelina Jolie, but thanks to the generally prejudiced stereotypical perception held in the West of the not-so-sexy Oriental male, such a scenario seems a little too far-fetched. Vivi can hardly be blamed for enjoying the supposed most beautiful woman in China like a trophy in his hands. He’s but an innocent man acting out his most basic instincts with no concern that his act might be perceived more sensitively than a private meeting between a Western leader and the Dalai Lama.

The Chinese fury bubbling over on the Internet is again bound to be short-lived. Since Israel is one of the few countries selling modern weapons to China, calling for a boycott of Israeli products is out of the question. More intriguingly, the Chinese government has avoided bashing Israel over their new war with the Palestinians in Gaza, a sign that could be interpreted as a no-objection vote on Vivi’s occupation of that attractive piece of Chinese territory.

And what about the label, “the shame of all Asian women”? A middle-aged Western man, looking as burly as a bull with the torso of a Roman warrior, is seen giving a massage to an Asian girl. Shouldn’t that be something like a Cinderella dream for all those who struggle day and night in the bars of Bangkok, Pattaya or Shanghai? The photos offer hope to Asian women that one day, thanks to some street-smart social-climbing shrewdness and a bit of luck, they could end up on that beach with a newly divorced Brad Pitt. And the clock will never strike 12 and it will never be time to return to a reality of poverty. As Ziyi awakened in a five-star hotel in Tianjian after returning to film a new movie, the only thing she had to worry about was a little jetlag and a few photos on the Internet.

十 年 笑 淚 罵 人 騷

那 一 次 工 作 是 愉 快 的 經 驗 。 卡 爾 聰 明 醒 目 ， 天 文 地 理 ， 一 說 上 句 ， 馬 上 接 得 出 下 句。 攝 影 隊 也 很 機 靈 ， 在 河 邊 拍 攝 ， 編 導 只 說 一 個 意 念 ， 他 看 見 天 上 飛 着 兩 隻 雁 ， 明明 劇 本 上 沒 有 的 ， 攝 影 師 覺 得 與 編 導 的 意 念 相 符 ， 跟 節 目 的 氣 氛 配 對 ， 馬 上 多 跑 一步 ， 自 動 把 飛 過 的 雁 拍 下 來 到 剪 接 室 備 用 。 　 香 港 的 人 力 資 源 問 題 ， 是 很 少 人 肯 多跑 這 一 步 。 還 沒 夠 班 就 上 了 電 視 ， 寧 願 給 主 持 人 罵 得 一 面 屁 ， 也 從 沒 想 到 過 ： 這 份節 目 助 理 的 月 薪 ， 即 使 只 有 八 千 ， 也 有 一 個 起 碼 的 要 求 ： 不 應 犯 愚 蠢 的 錯 誤 ， 而 被主 持 人 當 面 奚 落 。 　 這 個 道 理 ， 與 特 區 政 府 聘 任 什 麼 副 局 長 和 政 治 助 理 一 樣 。 紅 綠的 罷 駛 、 死 嬰 丟 進 堆 填 區 、 家 暴 條 例 修 訂 的 同 性 戀 歧 視 問 題 ， 每 一 件 都 迅 速 上 升 為政 治 風 暴 ， 一 幫 高 薪 的 副 局 長 和 政 治 助 理 在 哪 裡 ？ 　 輿 論 痛 罵 ， 市 民 責 難 ， 政 府 當然 不 舒 服 。 但 有 沒 有 想 過 ， 這 批 副 局 長 和 政 助 ， 就 如 同 蘇 施 黃 飲 食 節 目 裡 幾 位 被 罵的 女 助 理 — — 還 未 夠 班 ， 卻 為 什 麼 會 出 現 在 熒 幕 ？ 　 這 就 是 特 區 十 年 香 港 病 的 癥 結。 政 府 儲 備 的 現 金 豐 富 ， 職 位 太 多 ， 真 正 的 人 才 太 少 。 就 像 香 港 的 電 視 廣 播 ： 不 論收 費 免 費 ， 電 視 台 的 頻 道 太 濫 ， 什 麼 高 清 數 碼 、 衞 星 有 線 ， 二 十 四 小 時 　 Air Time， 沒 有 足 夠 的 節 目 填 塞 ， 更 遑 論 稱 職 的 電 視 專 業 人 員 。 主 持 人 罵 助 理 ，不 關 六 百 萬 市 民 的 事 ， 因 為 電 視 節 目 是 免 費 娛 樂 ， 但 副 局 長 和 政 治 助 理 ， 其 表 現 像煮 食 節 目 笨 頭 笨 腦 、 反 應 遲 鈍 的 助 手 一 樣 ， 同 時 卻 天 天 花 費 着 納 稅 人 的 錢 ， 六 百 萬香 港 人 加 報 紙 輿 論 ， 自 然 加 十 倍 奉 送 。

特 區 十 年 ， 民 族 主 義 分 子 最 初 敲 鑼 打 鼓 ， 以 為 香 港 很 容 易 管 治 ， 現 在 也 不 得 不 垂 頭喪 氣 。 說 來 也 真 洩 氣 ， 英 治 時 代 英 國 人 能 把 平 庸 的 人 包 裝 為 一 批 中 環 精 英 ， 連 中 國政 府 也 騙 過 ， 誤 以 為 他 們 是 未 來 的 「 治 港 人 才 」 。 　 原 來 英 國 人 施 掩 眼 法 ， 把 英 治時 代 的 行 政 局 和 政 務 官 凡 黃 臉 孔 的 ， 嘴 巴 都 加 上 封 條 ， 推 上 前 線 當 傀 儡 。 原 來 只 要收 聲 不 說 話 ， 不 要 用 腦 ， 只 管 執 行 ， 一 人 一 套 西 裝 ， 兩 邊 在 港 督 衞 奕 信 和 布 政 司 霍德 身 邊 一 站 ， 狐 假 虎 威 ， 形 象 身 價 即 時 奇 蹟 般 增 了 值 。 一 九 八 二 年 當 中 國 宣 布 即 將收 回 香 港 主 權 ， 十 五 年 過 渡 期 ， 英 國 與 大 陸 配 合 ， 高 官 本 地 化 ， 沒 有 一 樣 做 錯 ， 完全 依 照 中 方 的 指 揮 棒 ， 把 本 地 人 提 拔 上 來 ， 沒 想 到 一 覺 醒 來 ， 連 中 國 現 在 也 明 白 了： 港 人 治 港 ， 其 實 是 廢 人 治 港 。 　 二 十 世 紀 殖 民 地 獨 立 ， 非 洲 、 巴 基 斯 坦 、 孟 加 拉國 ， 本 來 都 有 一 個 寶 貴 的 機 會 ， 證 明 自 己 也 可 以 管 治 好 。 但 六 十 年 過 去 ， 看 看 津 巴布 韋 、 烏 干 達 ， 還 有 黑 人 自 相 殘 殺 的 盧 旺 達 ， 反 倒 證 明 黑 人 土 著 出 於 種 種 先 天 殘 障， 真 的 無 法 建 設 管 理 一 個 現 代 化 的 國 家 。 　 「 獻 醜 不 如 藏 拙 」 ， 中 國 人 一 早 就 懂 得了 其 中 的 道 理 。 如 果 美 國 太 空 總 署 明 天 寄 給 我 一 封 信 ， 以 二 百 萬 美 金 年 薪 請 我 去 甘迺 迪 中 心 做 太 空 工 程 的 行 政 總 監 ， 我 也 不 敢 去 。 因 為 我 心 裡 明 白 ， 這 份 工 作 我 做 不來 。 拒 絕 任 命 ， 是 因 為 有 自 知 之 明 。 　 奇 怪 的 是 ， 特 區 十 年 ， 我 所 認 得 的 許 多 人 ，看 見 「 港 人 治 港 」 的 宏 大 理 想 ， 真 的 蠢 蠢 欲 動 、 躍 躍 欲 試 ， 以 為 香 港 這 個 地 方 管 理有 何 難 ， 自 己 來 做 政 府 ， 也 能 管 得 比 英 國 人 好 。 結 果 不 幸 淪 為 今 日 香 港 官 場 的 「 蘇施 黃 罵 助 理 」 自 取 其 辱 的 現 象 。

肥 彭 當 末 代 港 督 ， 也 從 英 國 帶 來 兩 名 年 輕 的 貼 身 助 理 ， 花 名 「 大 細 龜 」 。 大 細 龜 很低 調 ， 不 像 今 日 的 什 麼 副 局 長 政 治 助 理 ， 動 不 動 就 一 字 形 排 開 ， 昂 首 挺 胸 ， 在 閃 光燈 中 噴 口 水 ， 大 說 治 港 抱 負 。 大 細 龜 沒 有 什 麼 顯 赫 的 官 職 ， 絕 不 爭 風 頭 。 有 一 次 ，灣 仔 北 的 新 華 戲 院 上 映 美 國 紀 錄 片 ， 導 演 韓 丁 的 《 天 安 門 》 ， 片 長 三 小 時 。 二 十 八歲 的 「 細 龜 」 盧 偉 能 長 得 很 矮 小 ， 悄 然 在 觀 眾 席 內 一 面 看 電 影 ， 一 面 低 頭 做 筆 記 。　 細 龜 來 香 港 時 只 有 二 十 八 歲 ， 是 英 國 伊 頓 公 學 出 身 ， 牛 津 歷 史 系 畢 業 。 他 在 香 港這 五 年 ， 沒 有 喝 紅 酒 ， 沒 有 去 馬 會 拉 頭 馬 ， 也 沒 有 天 天 表 演 購 物 做 騷 ， 今 天 趕 這 個社 團 的 剪 綵 禮 ， 明 天 出 席 那 個 同 鄉 會 的 酒 會 。 英 國 人 的 官 派 到 殖 民 地 ， 觀 察 、 勘 探、 讀 書 、 思 考 ， 一 部 大 英 百 科 全 書 就 是 無 數 這 樣 的 智 者 貢 獻 他 們 的 知 識 和 見 地 編 織而 成 的 。 　 當 年 的 細 龜 ， 今 天 在 哪 裡 ？ 他 是 在 野 保 守 黨 的 影 子 外 交 大 臣 。 如 果 英 國今 日 大 選 ， 白 高 敦 下 台 ， 金 馬 倫 的 保 守 黨 執 政 ， 細 龜 就 是 外 相 了 ， 隨 時 挺 身 而 出 到中 東 去 調 解 以 色 列 和 巴 勒 斯 坦 的 加 沙 浴 血 ， 然 後 轉 飛 華 盛 頓 與 奧 巴 馬 新 任 命 的 國 務卿 希 拉 莉 共 進 晚 餐 。 　 已 故 親 中 愛 國 的 鄔 維 庸 曾 經 老 羞 成 怒 ， 大 罵 英 國 佬 ： 撤 出 之前 ， 他 們 為 什 麼 不 把 治 港 的 一 套 心 法 教 給 香 港 的 精 英 ？ 問 題 是 ： 人 家 憑 什 麼 要 教 你？ 香 港 一 直 有 尋 求 知 識 的 自 由 、 學 術 思 考 的 自 由 ， 自 己 不 讀 書 ， 不 進 修 ， 搖 頭 晃 腦就 自 以 為 是 國 際 級 的 行 政 管 理 人 才 ， 碰 得 焦 頭 爛 額 ， 理 所 當 然 。 　 前 朝 種 因 ， 今 日得 果 。 「 港 人 治 港 」 終 於 修 成 正 果 了 。 換 來 的 卻 是 一 個 「 蘇 施 黃 的 世 界 」 。 好 笑 嗎？ 目 睹 十 年 前 後 這 場 戲 ， 看 見 其 中 充 滿 娛 樂 性 的 人 和 事 ， 生 逢 這 個 有 趣 的 時 代 ， 有那 麼 多 好 戲 看 ， 真 是 不 枉 此 生 。

曹仁超-投資者日記(12/01/2009)-財富消失效應存時差

1月11日，周日。1月係分享預測及展望嘅月份。回顧2008年1月大部分分析員嘅預測及展望，事後證明皆失準。咁點解2009年1月佢地嘅預測及展望仲有參考價值？去年1月，有邊個預測到雷曼事件？去年1月，有邊個話你知2008年會發生金融海嘯？再次證明人係冇預測能力。

美零售業進入長期下跌

有智慧不如追隨趨勢，2009年大趨勢係熊市二期延續，阻力喺16000點，支持喺10600點，相信2009年大部分日子恒指將喺呢個框框內上落，直到趨勢改變為止。點樣响上落市中搵食？上周六我老曹喺E*Trade研討會上有教，如各位冇參加，可睇睇2月份將出版嘅《信報月刊》；我老曹相信，2009年投資策略以揀股為主（Stock-Picking），唔似2008年大趨勢係向下，因此最好做「Short」（沽空），因我老曹唔做拋空，只有持盈保泰。此外，投資者應利用上周反彈減持銅、鎳及其他金屬股，因金屬價格只出現跌後反彈，一旦反彈完成後又再跌。

美國12月份零售業出現連續第六個月回落，係1992年以來最長一次回落期。面對失業率上升，加上股樓下跌令財富消失，美國零售業正進入長期回落。

英國樓價跌至2006年10月以來最低價。英國樓價2007年10月見頂後，有些地區樓價跌幅已達19.9%，而有些跌幅只有9.7%；十大地區中則無一不跌。

2009年面對股市「Go-Nowhere」，策略上係低買（例如恒指喺萬一點）、高賣（例如上周接近萬六點）。2009年仍有唔少機會可Double your money（例如去年11月至今年年初），相信未來仲有三次或以上。

2009 年經濟在惡化，但並非跌落深淵。股市去年面對去槓桿化及經濟衰退，2008年10月27日港股因超賣引發反彈，並喺2009年1月8日初結束。2009年係睇淡太遲、睇好太早，各位睇淡應喺2007年11月，最遲係2008年5月；睇好應係2010年之事（淡市不出三年）。因此，如非投資高手，2009年最好無所事事，例如吃喝玩樂。坦白講，2009年股市不宜散戶。

2009尋找傻瓜年

上周道指跌4.82%，收8599.18。上周一我老曹已提點大家利用1月反彈市減持，因企業純利展望在減少。上周跌幅最大係金融類，達8.18%。道指由去年11月21日反彈似乎已完成。

恭喜大家，雖然2008年損失不菲，但總算度過，因為活着就是精彩。

上周四美國波士頓聯儲銀行主席羅森倫格响麻省按揭銀行家協會年會上話，呢次衰退較大部分人想像中嚴重，同時更長！唯一利好因素係能源價格已回落，最終可令經濟止跌回升（佢2010年唔再連任聯儲局政策決策成員，其言也善乎）。

股市預測信唔過

著名投資家John Bogle（Vanguard集團創辦人）向散戶提出忠告：

一、不要信任何股市預測。嗰D所謂專家（華爾街十二大證券行）去年平均預測標普2008年年底見1640點，結果係2008年年底標普見903點。可以話全部睇錯市。

二、忘記資產分配（分散投資）。將資金集中及逃避風險而非分散風險。2008年係避險年而非分散風險年。

三、不要追求高回報，賺得愈多，風險愈大。2007年表現出色嘅基金，2008年皆虧損50％以上。响熊市之中，保本為上策。

四、自己唔識嘅嘢少沾手。唔少金融產品嘅出現，目的只係賺取佣金及費用，而非為投資者增加利潤。

1977 年美國政府通過Community Reinvestment Act，鼓勵FDIC向商業銀行及存款公司提供保險，以便佢地向社會上低中收入人士提供貸款。從此美國樓價進入反覆上升期，直到2006年 Countrywide Financial出事（美國每五宗樓按，就有一宗由該公司負責），令美國銀行（Bank of America）注入20億美元資金及提供115億美元信貸，美國聯儲局亦提供500億美元墊支。雖然係咁，2007年Countrywide仍支持唔住，股價由44.07美元跌至低於2美元。次按危機喺2007年逐步浮現，到去年9月雷曼兄弟事件引發全球金融海嘯。响各國央行大量注資下，道指喺去年 11月21日見7449點後企穩及反彈。事情係咪就咁過去？

柏克萊銀行頭頭John Varley認為，2009年及2010年美國樓價仍可回落15%。Cass Business School教授Andrew Clare認為，到2010年美國樓價將較2006年高峰回落40%。我老曹相信，恒生指數由2008年10月27日至2009年1月7日嘅上升，只係熊市二期內一次大反彈。

12月份美國又有五十二萬四千人失業；失業率已升至十六年新高，達7.2％，為1993年以來最高，估計2009年最高可見9％（2008年失業人數已達二百六十萬）。美國財赤已接近GDP 7％，如進一步上升，將危及美元嘅安全（例如財赤佔GDP 8％）。2009年將係苦難年（痛定思痛），唔知痛苦指數可上升到邊個水平。

美國債券泡沫爆破會否係「另一隻鞋」？債券價格下跌令按揭貸款唔再產生收益，其他貸款則面對賴賬，令金錢價值迅速消失，而產生compressive debt deflation（中文好難譯，大意係指因貸出嘅款項變成呆壞賬而產生通縮壓力）。

聯儲局為阻止上述情況出現，正以好債（國債）交換壞債（例如兩房債券）及向銀行注資，並要求佢地將資金貸出去。最終係市場力量戰勝政府干預，或係有形之手打贏無形之手？最後結果係：一、美國政府摧毀美元價值（例如戰後國民黨曾摧毀關金券及金圓券嘅價值，阿根廷政府及唔少南美洲及非洲政府亦曾摧毀本國貨幣嘅價值）；二、債券市場泡沫爆破。眼前形勢似乎係後者而非前者。次按危機後，美國政府並冇大量增加美鈔供應量，而只係大量增加美債，理由係美債吃香，市場出現 flight for quality現象；即投資者拋售房屋、股票、黃金、商品等產品，將資金用作吸納政府債券。不過，當美債供應大於需求，債券泡沫係咪已响去年12月已爆破，而令美債勢將大跌？

銀行業仲有排搞

2008年信貸收縮壓力只落喺金融市場上；2009年因企業破產、裁員漸漸影響實質經濟。美國12月份工廠訂單為1992年以來最大跌幅，信貸收縮令二手樓交投大減，服務業、零售業、飲食業衰退壓力亦在上升。例如美國三大汽車廠由二十四萬間供應商供應各種零件，即係話汽車不景氣除影響三大汽車廠嘅九十七萬工人外，亦涉及全球三百萬工人嘅就業問題。

2009年經濟大方向係收縮，因廉價能源、廉價原材料及廉價勞動力推動全球經濟向上嘅時代結束，由1982年開始全球GDP高增長時期亦告一段落。因收縮所產生嘅財富消失壓力，會否令全球生活水平下降，以及令更多人失去家園、收入甚至捱餓？只有耐心觀察。

所謂財富消失效應，係有兩年時差。美國樓價從2006年年中開始下跌，而美國消費減弱由2008年年中才開始【圖】；2009年1月美國樓價仍在回落，代表 2009年全年甚至之後美國消費力仍唔會上升。分析界估計2009年下半年美國經濟會復甦，只有傻瓜先至信！美國商場2008年第四季空置率高達7.1％（第三季6.6％），估計2009年第一季進一步上升。銀行業分析員Meredith Whitney相信，2009年全球銀行仍需大量注資，即銀行業仲有排搞。

春寒料峭更勝冬

2001年世界經濟開始下調，但格蛇同殊仔聯手阻止其下調，利用減稅、減息及美元滙價下跌，去造就2003到2007年繁榮期。2008年世界經濟又再下調，貝南奇雖盡九牛二虎之力去阻止，2009年再加埋奧巴馬，能否扭轉乾坤？例如利用公眾開支去抵銷私人消費下降，能否成功？恐怕美國呢架老爺車將步九十年代日本嘅後塵，再無法高速行駛矣。全球廉價資源及廉價勞動力時代，已因中國完成三十年改革開放而結束，美國已太老了，無力再打呢場仗。

改革開放「後繁榮期」將現

天下久分必合、久合必分。戰後美國同蘇聯喺政治、軍事上曾二分天下，最後美國勝出，响政治、軍事上出現一國獨大局面。但喺經濟上自1971年美元危機後，世界步入「三頭馬車」時代（即美國、日本同西德）。今天全球經濟仍係三分天下（即美國、亞太區同歐盟）。過去經濟上最強大嘅美國正進入衰退期，至於歐盟相信只能獨善其身，依家正在冒起嘅係亞太區（日本除外）。美國經濟大蕭條由1929年開始，到1946年才完全走出來，前後十七年。呢次由2007年11月開始嘅美國次按危機，需時幾耐才可走出來（日本1990年嘅衰退到2003年4月才見底，共十四年）？

至於歐盟因實施三十多年福利政策，對歐洲企業嚟講，早已成為沉重負擔，福利開支正在拖垮歐盟內嘅大企業，雖然唔似美國企業面對大量破產及重組，但大方向仍係好也好不了、壞也壞不了。反觀中國透過三十年改革開放政策，正在脫胎換骨，不但經濟上完成同國際接軌，並吸收歐美制度之長，而避免走上西方國家福利社會之路。

中國唔似歐盟由多國組成令力量分散，中國喺政權上係完全統一嘅大國，估計到2030年中國嘅實力可漸漸接近美國（但人均收入相信仍唔及美國人）。未來三十年，我地將睇見改革開放嘅「後繁榮期」出現。

PIMCO亞洲區董事Brian Baker認為，亞洲區經濟復甦仍有排等，即2009年無法好起來。

經常面對「三個我」

我老曹為TVB拍攝特輯，共用咗三天時間才拍成《我的2008》，喺上周一晚上10時35分出街。上周二走在街上，唔少人同我老曹打招呼，話係我老曹Fan屎！真係有D做明星嘅感覺。

做我地呢行，經常面對「三個我」。第一個「我」叫做形象。過去因每天寫日記、經常開研討會又或者上電視產生嘅那個「我」，其實只係我老曹嘅形象，唔係真我。另一個「我」係太太眼中嘅我——既為食又唔肯做運動，食生果要老婆切好至肯食。當然還有另一個「自我」藏喺內心深處，例如少年喪父之痛及對自己嘅期望，許多時因無法做到自己嘅期望而產生挫折感，往往响人人興高采烈時自己忽然沉默，因內心深處仍有一份莫名其妙嘅空虛感。

人係十分奇怪嘅動物。因我老曹從未做過舞台劇，對舞台劇有份好奇。2007年9月同詹瑞文兄做過《富爸爸，笑爸爸》後，認為做舞台劇付出與收穫不成比例（例如編寫嗰份劇本，單係度橋已用咗六星期，練習又用咗兩星期，最後三天更天天喺舞台上走來走去，合共用去八星期，而演出時間只有兩小時，能博取嘅只係台下一千幾百人嘅歡笑！）。呢次拍電視台半小時特輯，由同TVB劇本組見面商討內容開始到拍攝，共用去三天，每天八小時都幾辛苦，但收穫唔錯。不過，我老曹覺得最好玩都係做投資——嗰份緊張、刺激、得失感，冇一個行業能及。

Less Is More

Senior SAR government officials have been engaged in a showcase shopping spree at the local industry fair over Christmas and New Year to encourage people to buy more in order to save the economy. Chief Executive Donald Tsang emerged as the biggest spender, with a shopping bill totaling more than $10,000. He bought biscuits, vermicelli and oddly, two woks. Chief Secretary Henry Tang was rumored to have spent some $5,000 on some unknown foodstuffs including egg tarts. Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Stephen Lam—God knows why he had to join the buying stunt given his portfolio—had a more colorful list: honey and face cream, apparently for his wife and daughter; shirts and ties; dried sausages and mushrooms; and ten dozen towels at a sum of some $4,000. What a skillful political survivor; he was smart enough not to steal the show by outspending his two superiors.

It was a calculated move, one made in the hope that, like Jude Law posing for Dunhill, Hong Kong people will shop more, following the behavior of Big Brother. A strange idea indeed, for it is hard to imagine George Bush whirling off in his brand-new Chrysler car down Fifth Avenue in a desperate appeal to the American people to buy more US-made automobiles. Even Obama would not risk his popularity by whistling along in a running Volvo (now a subsidiary of Ford), stopping at a Starbucks in Manhattan and buying a few dozen mochas for his family and security agents.

What makes the SAR government believe that such political stunts work? For those with a longer memory, it was Margaret Thatcher who started the trend. When the former British prime minister visited China in 1982, she toured a market in Beijing and bought some grapefruit from a street hawker in a political gesture to endorse a budding free-market economy adopted by the Chinese communist regime. The Brits were obviously more sophisticated in performing the art of patronizing—in front of flashing cameras, she took out a banknote of just one yuan from her handbag and elegantly handed it to the grateful hawker—a generous reward from the great nation of Adam Smith for the Chinese under the late paramount leader Deng Xiaoping, who, after all those nightmarish Maoist years, had finally woken up to some common sense.

十 年 愚 蠢 笑 尋 常

曾 蔭 權 政 府 的 教 育 局 宣 布 對 「 母 語 教 學 」 進 行 「 微 調 」 ， 終 於 把 十 年 禍 港 的 「 母 語教 育 」 偷 偷 「 調 」 掉 了 。 一 項 愚 蠢 的 政 策 ， 當 初 推 出 是 何 等 豪 情 壯 志 ， 「 母 語 教 學」 原 來 今 日 證 實 是 特 區 十 年 假 大 空 的 「 教 育 三 聚 氰 胺 」 ， 可 憐 一 代 兒 童 ， 被 一 個 愚蠢 的 政 府 做 白 老 鼠 實 驗 ， 成 為 董 建 華 及 其 團 夥 禍 港 的 犧 牲 品 。

說 「 母 語 教 學 」 不 行 ， 當 然 不 盡 如 此 ， 「 母 語 教 學 」 本 來 無 辜 ， 因 為 連 孫 中 山 、 康有 為 、 梁 啟 超 ， 小 時 候 也 是 接 受 私 塾 裡 的 「 母 語 教 學 」 的 ， 卻 不 妨 礙 他 們 成 為 思 想現 代 化 、 鄙 棄 中 國 黑 暗 傳 統 文 化 的 先 驅 。 　 「 母 語 教 學 」 本 來 無 罪 ， 是 一 個 愚 蠢 的政 府 把 「 母 語 教 學 」 制 定 成 一 項 「 政 策 」 ， 才 有 罪 。 董 伯 一 上 台 ， 繼 承 了 彭 定 康 和英 國 人 留 下 的 萬 億 儲 備 和 維 港 一 個 夜 空 的 煙 花 ， 亢 奮 的 土 包 子 「 當 家 作 主 」 的 中 國式 痙 攣 發 作 ， 決 定 把 「 港 英 」 的 遺 跡 一 一 洗 刷 。 「 母 語 教 學 政 策 」 注 定 失 敗 ， 是 因為 董 特 首 由 一 開 始 ， 就 把 「 母 語 教 學 」 當 做 「 愛 國 大 躍 進 」 的 表 忠 政 策 來 「 狠 抓 」， 以 為 「 母 語 愛 國 ， 一 抓 就 靈 」 ， 殊 不 知 已 上 了 聰 明 絕 頂 的 英 國 人 的 大 當 。 　 為 什麼 ？ 因 為 在 英 治 時 代 ， 即 使 「 英 語 教 學 」 ， 也 從 來 不 是 政 府 明 文 規 定 的 一 項 「 政 策」 。 英 國 人 從 來 沒 有 「 標 籤 」 宣 示 ： 英 語 比 華 文 高 等 。 殖 民 地 時 代 ， 教 會 督 辦 的 培正 中 學 、 真 光 女 子 中 學 ， 以 中 文 教 學 ， 其 校 董 地 位 ， 絕 對 不 比 用 英 語 教 學 的 灣 仔 大佛 口 的 聖 璐 琦 、 北 角 的 聖 雲 仙 、 鰂 魚 涌 的 崇 文 英 文 書 院 ， 還 有 九 龍 的 飛 仔 校 博 允 英文 書 院 低 等 。 　 「 港 英 」 默 不 作 聲 ， 取 錄 政 務 官 ， 只 從 英 皇 、 皇 仁 直 升 到 港 大 的 那條 線 上 挑 選 。 「 港 英 」 雖 是 全 港 最 大 的 僱 主 ， 卻 不 是 唯 一 的 僱 主 ， 是 香 港 民 間 自 己在 竊 竊 私 語 ， 感 覺 到 原 來 走 皇 仁 和 英 皇 這 條 「 英 語 教 育 精 英 線 」 ， 才 可 以 挨 近 英 女王 的 肖 像 一 些 ， 得 到 高 薪 厚 職 。

這 一 切 只 是 殖 民 地 市 場 的 一 種 自 賤 多 情 的 心 理 效 應 ， 本 來 並 非 絕 症 ， 完 全 「 有 得 醫」 ， 讀 中 文 教 學 的 培 正 ， 絕 對 比 讀 英 語 教 學 的 聖 璐 琦 和 博 允 好 ， 因 為 培 正 的 辦 學 機構 ， 是 美 國 教 會 ， 而 聖 璐 琦 和 聖 雲 仙 之 流 ， 是 幾 個 黃 臉 孔 的 中 國 人 偽 冒 西 洋 開 的 學店 ， 這 是 市 場 競 爭 的 另 一 面 ， 英 國 人 何 來 「 標 籤 」 ？ 　 愚 蠢 的 特 區 政 府 ， 一 開 頭 就說 要 打 破 「 英 語 教 學 優 越 標 籤 效 應 」 ， 是 自 己 的 心 裡 有 一 個 義 和 團 的 幽 靈 心 魔 。 既要 「 消 除 標 籤 」 ， 就 要 「 制 定 政 策 」 ， 好 了 ， 一 旦 成 為 「 政 策 」 ， 哪 些 可 以 保 留 英語 教 學 ， 仍 是 殖 民 地 時 代 那 百 家 名 校 ， 其 他 「 不 符 要 求 」 的 ， 一 刀 切 下 ， 通 通 要 改用 「 母 語 」 。 　 這 就 令 全 香 港 天 愁 地 慘 ， 哭 哭 啼 啼 ， 搞 出 一 場 本 來 是 英 語 教 學 的 ，不 服 轉 制 ， 「 不 要 老 母 」 ， 寧 死 也 要 抱 住 英 語 大 腿 的 鬧 劇 。 全 世 界 都 見 識 到 ， 不 但特 區 政 府 這 樣 一 刀 切 ， 原 來 是 自 己 把 本 來 沒 有 「 標 籤 」 為 二 等 的 中 文 教 學 真 的 標 了二 等 籤 ， 還 引 蛇 出 洞 ， 把 「 母 語 教 學 」 官 方 地 定 為 政 策 。 　 也 不 知 道 原 來 香 港 那 麼多 家 長 、 教 師 、 學 生 ， 戀 洋 心 切 ， 思 英 情 悲 ， 寧 願 殺 校 ， 也 不 要 中 文 這 個 二 等 的 老母 ！ 　 這 一 幕 ， 證 明 「 殖 民 主 義 」 原 來 在 「 愛 國 」 的 偽 善 口 號 之 下 ， 竟 是 優 越 貨 色， 是 半 世 紀 英 國 撤 出 殖 民 地 史 以 來 ， 從 未 出 現 過 的 超 級 笑 劇 。 因 為 董 建 華 政 府 推 行「 母 語 教 學 政 策 」 ， 是 「 親 中 唯 恐 不 及 」 、 「 愛 國 怕 落 後 於 人 」 ， 一 窩 蜂 表 態 的 情緒 大 發 作 ， 缺 乏 科 學 的 思 辯 ， 竟 敢 挑 戰 人 心 市 場 ， 結 果 「 愛 國 」 變 成 為 他 「 愛 」 的這 個 國 家 ， 在 英 國 人 和 國 際 面 前 出 了 一 次 大 醜 。

「 中 國 人 民 站 起 來 了 」 的 第 一 課 狼 狽 撻 Q， 英 美 、 加 拿 大 、 澳 洲 的 學 府 看 在 眼 裡 ，紛 紛 湧 來 香 港 開 辦 各 類 大 學 和 寄 宿 中 學 的 展 銷 會 。 全 港 「 母 語 教 學 政 策 」 的 家 長 苦主 ， 好 像 電 影 《 奪 寶 奇 兵 》 第 三 集 裡 ， 在 深 山 的 礦 場 被 奴 役 的 一 眾 印 度 童 工 看 見 白人 男 主 角 夏 里 遜 福 從 天 而 降 一 樣 ， 欣 喜 若 狂 ， 逼 爆 玻 璃 。 澤 惠 所 及 ， 連 董 建 華 的 特別 助 理 葉 國 華 先 生 開 辦 的 英 語 教 學 的 「 國 際 學 校 」 ， 也 賺 得 盆 滿 鉢 滿 。 　 「 母 語 教學 政 策 」 之 蠢 ， 不 但 是 董 伯 個 人 的 腦 殘 問 題 ， 還 印 證 了 中 國 式 的 「 港 人 治 港 」 之 愚昧 笨 蛋 。 因 為 董 建 華 不 是 民 選 的 特 首 ， 畢 竟 在 一 九 九 七 年 就 任 之 初 ， 得 到 香 港 的 「民 意 支 持 」 竟 高 達 八 成 有 多 。 且 不 說 愛 國 政 黨 ， 吹 捧 有 加 ， 「 母 語 教 學 」 推 出 ， 保皇 輿 論 一 片 叫 好 。 蠢 的 不 只 是 董 建 華 一 人 ， 而 是 香 港 這 個 英 國 人 執 包 袱 離 開 之 後 ，自 以 為 有 能 力 「 當 家 作 主 」 的 社 會 。 　 當 初 盲 信 「 英 國 人 臨 走 必 埋 地 雷 」 ， 誤 以 為英 語 教 學 ， 是 英 國 人 埋 下 的 地 雷 ， 哪 知 這 十 年 來 ， 香 港 特 區 政 府 與 一 個 虛 幻 的 「 地雷 」 一 起 瞎 折 騰 ， 到 頭 來 ， 自 己 倒 給 自 己 埋 下 一 個 真 地 雷 。 這 個 世 界 ， 蠢 人 和 蠢 事， 多 不 勝 數 ， 像 特 區 政 府 如 此 蠢 的 一 個 辦 事 決 策 機 構 ， 真 是 曠 古 未 聞 。

好 了 ， 總 算 由 「 港 英 餘 孽 」 的 曾 蔭 權 和 孫 明 揚 撥 亂 反 正 了 ， 當 初 擁 董 支 持 「 母 語 教學 」 的 政 治 食 客 ， 一 個 個 噤 若 寒 蟬 ， 好 像 什 麼 事 也 沒 發 生 過 一 樣 。 但 香 港 家 長 不 要以 為 萬 事 大 吉 ， 曾 孫 的 政 治 壽 命 ， 還 只 有 短 短 三 年 ， 中 國 人 的 政 治 ， 一 向 現 實 ， 講「 人 亡 政 息 」 。 今 日 曾 蔭 權 在 「 母 語 教 學 」 膽 敢 「 去 董 化 」 ； 將 來 另 一 個 上 台 ， 為了 把 責 任 往 上 推 ， 也 一 定 推 行 「 非 曾 蔭 權 化 」 ， 「 母 語 教 學 」 這 個 政 治 舊 病 ， 還 有新 症 再 生 的 機 會 ， 但 不 怕 ， 至 少 還 有 三 年 ， 有 一 點 財 力 的 家 長 ， 不 要 浪 費 曾 孫 在 位這 三 年 ， 讓 子 女 接 受 重 新 「 標 籤 」 為 高 等 的 英 語 教 學 ， 然 後 效 法 大 陸 的 高 官 一 樣 ，送 子 女 去 英 美 讀 書 吧 。 　 聰 明 的 彭 定 康 ， 在 英 治 最 後 五 年 ， 悄 悄 鬆 了 章 ， 容 許 「 母語 教 學 」 成 為 官 方 政 策 ， 讓 後 來 的 那 個 笨 蛋 「 接 波 」 。 以 董 建 華 班 子 的 中 國 式 IQ，彭 定 康 做 的 ， 必 然 是 錯 ， 何 獨 肥 彭 認 可 的 「 母 語 教 學 」 會 例 外 ？ 這 就 是 中 國 人 的 盲點 了 。 羅 范 椒 芬 女 士 當 教 統 局 常 秘 時 ， 為 此 申 辯 ， 向 我 申 訴 ： 「 母 語 教 學 是 彭 定 康時 代 定 下 的 ！ 」 我 說 ： 「 那 麼 ， 母 語 教 學 就 是 『 港 英 』 給 你 預 埋 的 地 雷 了 。 『 凡 是敵 人 擁 護 的 ， 我 們 就 要 反 對 』 ， 這 是 毛 澤 東 教 的 ， 抱 住 這 顆 地 雷 ， 不 是 傻 瓜 是 什 麼？ 」 　 我 記 得 那 天 是 在 麗 嘉 酒 店 的 下 午 茶 ， 羅 太 太 無 言 以 對 的 表 情 。 今 天 ， 羅 范 女士 新 職 就 任 ， 她 終 於 向 「 母 語 教 學 」 的 詛 咒 告 別 了 。 恭 喜 她 ， 十 年 河 西 ， 羅 范 羅 范， 茶 座 對 話 ， 今 猶 記 乎 ？

The Lady Who Lost Hong Kong

As a strong leader, Margaret Thatcher not only overshadows most of her predecessors, but, by virtue of the commencement date of her prime ministership, she also eclipses the anniversary of the May 4th Movement, a violent student demonstration in Peking in 1919 calling for democracy and protesting government corruption—an event still hailed, with some wishful thinking, by many Chinese intellectuals as China’s enlightenment, but all but forgotten by the rest of the world.

May 4 is remembered instead for Mrs. Thatcher coming to power in 1979, a watershed in world history. She changed the social fabric of Britain. With her imperial blue dress, her hawkish, penetrating eyes, and her unimpressive middle-class handbag from Marks and Spencer, the Iron Lady destroyed trade unions, enabled millions to buy their own homes, rekindled the spirit of the market economy, and won a naval war.

I remember the old days when I first arrived in Britain in the late 1970s. Old Labour had failed the economy and Britain seemed to be in its death throes. Rubbish had piled up in Picadilly Circus, the railway was paralyzed by strikes, and there were reports that dead bodies were not being collected and instead dumped on the streets. London seemed more like Moscow or East Berlin during the Cold War. “An old man in the closed-down market, kicking up the paper with his worn-out shoes,” Britain was governed by a dark gallery of haggard ghouls, and a gaggle of old pale-faced Marxists. Not many people these days remember names like Foreign Secretary Denis Healy, Home Secretary Roy Hattersley and Prime Minister Jim Callaghan. They were the people who had transformed the lyrics of the pop song “Streets of London” into a grim reality.

Margaret Thatcher changed all of this. She made herself a role model for what is understood today as political leadership. She hated words like “consensus” and “divisiveness.” With a democratic mandate, she knew there was no time to seek “consensus” among the people. Her charisma both charmed and provoked, offending from time to time and leading people to either see her as a Messiah or a plague. There was no three-month “consultation period” with the public before she decided to invade the Falklands, a move guided half by her gut feelings and half out of patriotism. I am lucky to have spent the prime years of my life witnessing this change.

Among all of her achievements, there is a tiny flaw. An arrogant Thatcher raised the issue of the Hong Kong treaties with Deng Xiaoping in the hopes of renewing the glory of the British Empire in the Far East. Had she been better advised, she would have known that face counts more than anything in communist China. Someone in Hong Kong who understood the Chinese psyche better had suggested that she was best off pretending the treaties didn’t exist, which the Chinese never recognized anyway, and the status quo would have been allowed to straddle over the 1997 deadline. But the law-abiding lady refused to muddle it through, which is sometimes an art in and of itself in politics. It soon became a mistake she regretted. And the rest, as we are all sadly aware, is history.

We’re in 2009, not 2551

I received a greeting card this year from the SAR chief executive’s office. Or more precisely, I received a card wishing me only “a prosperous new year” without mentioning “Merry Christmas.” It is a popular Western liberal fad these days to think that saying “Merry Christmas” could offend all Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus of the world.

It is no surprise that the chief executive should follow this universal rule of political correctness, especially when Michelle Obama is mailing out greeting cards with the even more neutral message of “Happy Winter Holidays.” But if referring to anything associated with Jesus Christ is a crime, the American president-elect will have an awful lot to “change.” Obama will be sworn in with his hand on the Bible. He will end his Oath of Office with the words, “so help me God.” Should he place the Koran and Hindu and Buddhists scripts together, and specify which god he is seeking help from (Allah perhaps, in order not to offend the Muslims of the world)?

If it should be out of vogue to say “Merry Christmas” together with “Happy New Year,” then why are we entering 2009, a year with a reference to the birth of Christ? Could Hong Kong become the first country in the world to officially adopt the use of the Buddhist calendar? For one thing, there would be no countdown celebration of the so-called “New Year” in Lan Kwai Fong this year seeing as we would simply be in the middle of year 2551.

The fear that wishing a merry Christmas and a happy new year to someone could “offend” all non-Christians in the world is not just a naïve hypothesis, but a subtle act of discrimination in the name of “multiculturalism.” It assumes that all Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus are so narrow-minded and irrational that they would be deeply “offended” and “hurt” by the sheer mentioning of these greetings, and as a result, the implication is that they might be motivated to hatch a plot to blow up the Canterbury Cathedral or St. Peter’s Basilica as revenge. So let’s not “offend” them, just as we would avoid provoking a mad dog on the street—don’t look into its eyes, lest it barks and bites.

Western political-correctionists should pay a visit to Hong Kong. I think they’d be surprised by how many Peter Wongs, Paul Chans and Mary Cheungs there are here, all of them using self-adopted Christian names that make us Hong Kong people likelier to obtain a tourist visa to the US or Australia than the brow-furrowing XYZs of our mainland Chinese countrymen—Xing Xiao-zhong or Zhang Xiao-ying, etc. Maybe it’s also surprising that St. Teresa’s Hospital remains one of the best and most expensive private hospitals in Hong Kong, and nobody has demanded its name be changed to Tin Hau, the Empress of the Seas as worshipped by Cantonese fishermen. So, after a Merry Christmas, a Happy Christian New Year to you all.
